Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 2026
1. Information we collect
Account details you provide directly (name, email, phone, location), professional credentials for lawyer/firm/police accounts, messages sent through the platform, and payment metadata from Paystack (eLegal never stores full card numbers). We also collect basic usage data such as pages visited and device/browser information.
2. How we use it
To operate the directory and match clients with professionals, to verify lawyer and firm credentials before a profile goes live, to process subscription payments, to send account and transactional notifications, and to maintain platform security.
3. Legal basis
We process personal data under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, relying on your consent at signup, the necessity of processing to perform our contract with you, and our legitimate interest in keeping the platform safe and functional.
4. Who we share data with
Paystack, for payment processing. Other users, only to the extent your profile is public (lawyers, firms) or a conversation you've started requires it (messaging). We do not sell personal data to third parties.
5. Data retention
Account data is retained for as long as your account is active, plus a reasonable period afterward for legal and audit purposes. You can request deletion of your account at any time, subject to records we're required to keep by law.
6. Your rights
Under the NDPA, you can request access to the personal data we hold about you, request correction of inaccurate data, request deletion, and withdraw consent for processing that relies on it. Contact privacy@elegal.ng to exercise any of these rights.
7. Security
Passwords are hashed, payments are verified server-side rather than trusted from the browser, and admin accounts can suspend compromised or suspicious accounts. No system is perfectly secure, and we encourage using a strong, unique password.
8. Cookies
eLegal uses a session cookie to keep you signed in and a CSRF token cookie to protect against cross-site request forgery. We don't use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.
9. Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated as the platform evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated revision date.
